Ferries to Rishiri-Rebun Island are operationg year-round, but you need to pay attention to the schedule, because frequency of services and departure time change depending on months. Three time operating months are the best seasons, but you should better check HearLandFerry homepage to make sure if ferry services are cancelled or delayed depending on weather and wave conditions. Though there are chairs at the rear of ferry, you cannot almost see seabirds from there. If you stand at east or west side of corridors in ferry and get watching the sea, you can watch Japanese Cormorant, Pelagic Cormorant, Black-tailed Gull and Slaty-backed Gull near Wakkanai, Rishiri and Rebun ports. Rhinoceros Auklets, which breed in Todo Islet, Rebun Island, are often observed within 30 minutes from ports, and Ancient Murrelets and Common Murres are rarely observed more than 30 munites offshore from autumn to spring. From mainly spring to summer, you have a chance to see shearwater such as Sooty Sharewater, Black-legged Kittiwake and Pomarine Skua, if you see farther using binoculars.
